Birmingham…Did You Know?

October 30th, 2008 by The BookaSkip United Kingdom Skip Hire Team

Birmingham is a city and metropolitan borough in the West Midlands county of England. The City of Birmingham district has a population of 1,000,000+ making it the second largest city in the UK. It is the largest of England’s core cities, and is often considered to be the second city of the United Kingdom.

The city has played an important part in the history of sport. It was the first city to be named National City of Sport by the Sports Council. It is home to two of the country’s oldest professional football teams:, Aston Villa (1874) and Birmingham City (1875).

Birmingham city’s reputation was forged as a powerhouse of the Industrial Revolution in England, a fact which led to Birmingham being known as “the workshop of the world”.

In November 2006 the City Council approved a new Waste Management Strategy to run from 2006 – 2026. This will enable the City Council to meet the Government’s current national recycling and composting target of 30% by 2010 and 33% by 2015.

Amongst the series of targets in the new strategy the City Council is committed to:

  • a target of doubling the 2005/06 (17%) recycling and composting performance within 5 years
  • a target to reach 40% recycling and composting rate by 2026

You may require a skip bin for the removal of landscaping or home improvement debris, rather than recycling and composting. If you are based in Birmingham, take a look at the skip hire prices that are currently available at www.bookaskip.co.uk.

Looking to hire a skip bin in London?  Have a look at www.bookaskip.co.uk where you can get an instant online quote and book your skip hire in less than 60 seconds!

London Skip Hire Facts:

- London exports 70% of its municipal waste out of the capital for treatment or disposal. Source: Environment Agency.

- London has historically relied on cheap landfill as the final point of disposal for its waste. Large volumes of material are exported, mainly by road to the Home Counties and beyond. London needs to buy its landfill habit as space is running out. Most landfill sites will be full in a few years, not centuries.

- The restrictions on landfill space, coupled with the level of consumption, are driving the demand for better and more appropriate methods of waste management.

- Recycling is the number one green activity and UK householders currently produce 35 million tons of waste every year, yet 26 million tones goes direct to landfill. Source: waste to landfill figures from www.wrap.org.uk
