What can I do with Food Waste???

December 14th, 2009 by The BookaSkip United Kingdom Skip Hire Team

As food waste cannot be collected in a skip the best thing to do with it is compost it!
Find out how by visiting www.greenusesforwaste.co.uk

What is the Eden Project?
A former CIWM Award winner for Environmental Excellence, the Eden Project has become a composting journey.

Since it started turning its kitchen scraps and café leftovers into compost for its world famous gardens, the Eden Project has now diverted 100 tones of food waste from landfill.
An onsite composter was installed in 2005 and now claims to convert around 90% of its food waste into a soil enhancement product used in gardens and on its range of plants.

The Operations Manager says ” the whole composting process is a great educational tool for visitors, because they see the journey of their food from the plate through to the plant. It starts as they sort waste from their trays into different containers, and ends as they pass by the composting plant which has deliberately sited near once of the public car parks.”

Which Type?

January 8th, 2009 by The BookaSkip United Kingdom Skip Hire Team

One question we are asked regularly is …. “Which type of skip is best for food waste?”

Unfortunately food waste is not accepted in skips, a great way to rid yourself of it is by composting. If you want to find out more about how to compost there are many good websites on the internet that will give you tips and ideas to try.

Did you know that approximately 1/3 of the food we buy is being thrown away?!! Most of it could be eaten too! An average family spends approximately £420 a year on wasted food, so this is a pretty big issue.

All this waste has environmental implications too, if we stop wasting all this food, the CO2 impact would be the same as having 5 less cars on the road.

A great website to visit to find out more is http://www.lovefoodhatewaste.com. The “Love Food, Hate Waste” campaign aims to raise awareness of the need to reduce the amount of food that we throw away, and how doing this will benefit us as a whole.

How’s Your Day Going?

September 18th, 2008 by The BookaSkip United Kingdom Skip Hire Team

Fuel prices are STILL going up, butter seems to get more expensive everyday and wasn’t recycling supposed to be the next big thing, solve all of our problems! Something about Reuse, Reduce, Recycle?

At the rate we’re going its no surprise renowned architect Vincent Callebaut has introduced the idea of floating cities!!! Especially if the predictions of the current climate change are anything to go by. But don’t start water proofing your belongings just yet…if everyone does their part it CAN make a difference.

On average Bookaskip generates hundreds of skip orders for suppliers throughout the UK, making waste management in your household a breeze. Instead of disposing hazardous waste (this includes asbestos, t.v’s, monitors, fridges, paints, solvents, liquids, etc.) think about the impact it will have on the enviornment and your childrens children.

Contact your local council to find out more.

Bins Please!!!

August 14th, 2008 by The BookaSkip United Kingdom Skip Hire Team

A sudden craze across Europe to recycle and a “rumored” fire in the production factory has lead to a shortage of replacement recycle bins and wheelie bins.

Councils all around Britain have been informing rate payers that the required bins may not be available for up to 3 months!

The main UK areas affected are Derbyshire, Lancashire, Lewisham and South Oxfordshire. (If you live in these areas and currently have a bin, hold on to it tight, as local media are predicting that up to sixty bins are being stolen per week!)

If you require a bin in the meantime (to prevent rodent’s visiting and keep your garden smelling sweet) try booking a skip online, you may even want to talk to you neighbors and book one between you to share…

Check out the rates on offer at www.bookaskip.co.uk, just enter your postcode and follow the prompts…. the site will present you a free quote instantly.
