Agrivert opens £9m Cassington AD Plant

October 21st, 2010 by The BookaSkip United Kingdom Skip Hire Team

Yesterday organics recycling firm Agrivert  officially opened its 45,000 tonnes-a-year capacity anaerobic digestion facility at Cassington near Oxford.

The plant will be used to turn municipal food waste into 2MW of renewable electricity to be supplied to the National Grid. The £9 million plant was developed as a joint venture with skip hire firm M&M Skip Hire under a 20-year contract with Oxfordshire county council.

At the official opening ceremony councilor Ian Hudspeth, cabinet member for growth and infrastructure at Oxfordshire county council, said: “This is a fantastic facility that is performing a key role in reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill in Oxfordshire, providing sustainable and renewable electricity for over 4,000 homes. The plant will also provide quality fertilizer for local agriculture - a real win-win scenario.”The 45,000 tone a year capacity plant will be used to treat food waste from Oxfordshire. Waste will be decontaminated, homogenised and pasteurised before being pumped into digesters. Bacteria breaks down the organic material in the absence of oxygen - which produces methane-rich biogas. This methane is captured, cleaned and fed into a gas engine, which powers a generator creating renewable electricity. The plant, which is in the final stages of commissioning, is also set to produce renewable heat, which Agrivert intends to use to help heat the pasteurizers and the digesters. And, in later phases of development, surplus heat will be used to dry woodchip to provide a sustainable fuel source.Agrivert was awarded a long-term contract with Oxfordshire county council in March 2009 - at which time it announced its plans to develop what it stated was the first large-scale municipal waste AD plant.

Clean Streets a Big Concern…

January 12th, 2010 by The BookaSkip United Kingdom Skip Hire Team

A Keep Britain Tidy survey into the importance of the quality of our streets , compared to other issues of world concern, saw the credit crunch top the list of worries, with violent crime and then local environmental quality - as a high priority as terrorism and global warming.

“The Word on Our Street” survey also found that we feel guiltier if we drop litter than when we speed on a motorway or bunk off work for the day!

The survey reported that we link littered streets to our fear of crime.

Phil Barton (Keep Britain Tidy CEO) said “This is really important, people’s perception of safety and well being are affected by the area they live in. If we can tackle things such as litter and graffiti we can also improve people’s quality of life and feelings of wellbeing. Our survey shows that people feel guilty about dropping litter. So why do they persist in doing it? If we can tap into this maybe we can reduce this happening?”

What can I do with Food Waste???

December 14th, 2009 by The BookaSkip United Kingdom Skip Hire Team

As food waste cannot be collected in a skip the best thing to do with it is compost it!
Find out how by visiting www.greenusesforwaste.co.uk

What is the Eden Project?
A former CIWM Award winner for Environmental Excellence, the Eden Project has become a composting journey.

Since it started turning its kitchen scraps and café leftovers into compost for its world famous gardens, the Eden Project has now diverted 100 tones of food waste from landfill.
An onsite composter was installed in 2005 and now claims to convert around 90% of its food waste into a soil enhancement product used in gardens and on its range of plants.

The Operations Manager says ” the whole composting process is a great educational tool for visitors, because they see the journey of their food from the plate through to the plant. It starts as they sort waste from their trays into different containers, and ends as they pass by the composting plant which has deliberately sited near once of the public car parks.”

Waste In Wales - Recycling The Creative Way!

August 27th, 2009 by The BookaSkip United Kingdom Skip Hire Team

Three years ago Wales produced twenty five million tonnes of waste. From the seven million tonnes handled by our waste facilities in Wales in 2007, around half of the waste, went to landfill sites. These landfills have eight years of space remaining, which because of the way we live our life will never be enough. And it is not good for our environment.

We need to review what we do with our rubbish and recycling is part of the answer. Trying to reuse it before we bin it is a sensible option.

Val Hunt is an artist who is actioning this plan.

She uses recyclable manufactured materials such foil, take-away containers, computer parts and especially metal from drink cans. Much of her inspiration comes from natural forms. Patterns, colours and logos often appear on the finished, expertly crafted objects.

The Alchemist’s Garden is an inspiring, exciting new exhibition full of exotic plants, birds, pond life and wildlife all constructed from throw away material.

This exhibition unites two of Val Hunt’s touring exhibitions: Reincarnated Rubbish and the Alchemist’s Garden in one. Reincarnated Rubbish is Val Hunt’s touring solo exhibition.

’Reincarnated Rubbish’ and ’The Alchemist’s Garden’ are full of witty, humorous, imaginative and thought provoking constructions which will wet the appetite and encourage everyone to experience the fun of creative recycling.

Her exhibition runs from 7th September until 7th October 2009 at the Washington Gallery in Penarth and is worth a visit.

What Can You Put In Your Skip Hire?

April 23rd, 2008 by The BookaSkip United Kingdom Skip Hire Team

Most people are not aware of what they can and cannot put in their skip hire. So to avoid any hassles and extra charges when it comes time for collection, the following items are classed as “hazardous waste” and SHOULD NOT be disposed of: TV’s, monitors, fridges, paints, solvents, liquids or any sort of asbestos. To dispose of any of these hazardous materials you need to contact your local council. They will be able to provide you with a contact who can dispose of any hazardous items that you may have.

Skips can be used for general waste which is typically anything involved with a general cleanup around the house and property.  If you have any questions about your skip hire, feel free to contact us via our Live Chat where one of our wonderful customer reps will be happy to assist you.
