Save The World - Slim Your Bin!

February 8th, 2011 by The BookaSkip United Kingdom Skip Hire Team

Can an average person really create zero waste?
The challenge was set during March 2008, and one mother gave it a go, managing to only throw away one plaster!
It’s easy and you may save money too! Slim your bin and try your own rubbish diet…find out more here….

http://therubbishdiet.blogspot.com

The Rubbish Diet is written by Karen Cannard, a housewife and now freelance writer, based in Bury. The blog was only intended to last for just 8 weeks, to chart Karen’s attempts at slimming down her bin for Zero Waste Week in March 2008. However, having realised the importance of the issue she went on to inspire many others. As a result, Karen’s work was shortlisted in the 2009 Media Guardian Awards for Innovation, in the Independent Media category and was also a finalist in the CIWM awards for Environmental Excellence in the category of Recycling Champion. So if you want to talk rubbish with Karen, aka Almost Mrs Average, please get in touch by email at karen[at]therubbishdiet[dot]co[dot]uk. More information about what Karen gets up to is also available at www.karencannard.co.uk.

How Do I Dispose of Hazardous Waste?

November 23rd, 2010 by The BookaSkip United Kingdom Skip Hire Team

Hazardous waste – including electrical items like TVs, computers and fridges – shouldn’t be put into the normal rubbish collection or a skip.

Instead, contact your council, who will be able to advise you on where to take all types of hazardous waste in your area. Most hazardous waste can be taken to your local waste and recycling centre (sometimes referred to as the ‘tip’ or the ‘dump’), which is run by your local council. In some cases, your local council may be able to collect the waste from you – there may be a charge for this. If you want to find out more take a look at the following helpful website: http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Environmentandgreenerliving/Wasteandrecycling/DG_10014614

Agrivert opens £9m Cassington AD Plant

October 21st, 2010 by The BookaSkip United Kingdom Skip Hire Team

Yesterday organics recycling firm Agrivert  officially opened its 45,000 tonnes-a-year capacity anaerobic digestion facility at Cassington near Oxford.

The plant will be used to turn municipal food waste into 2MW of renewable electricity to be supplied to the National Grid. The £9 million plant was developed as a joint venture with skip hire firm M&M Skip Hire under a 20-year contract with Oxfordshire county council.

At the official opening ceremony councilor Ian Hudspeth, cabinet member for growth and infrastructure at Oxfordshire county council, said: “This is a fantastic facility that is performing a key role in reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill in Oxfordshire, providing sustainable and renewable electricity for over 4,000 homes. The plant will also provide quality fertilizer for local agriculture - a real win-win scenario.”The 45,000 tone a year capacity plant will be used to treat food waste from Oxfordshire. Waste will be decontaminated, homogenised and pasteurised before being pumped into digesters. Bacteria breaks down the organic material in the absence of oxygen - which produces methane-rich biogas. This methane is captured, cleaned and fed into a gas engine, which powers a generator creating renewable electricity. The plant, which is in the final stages of commissioning, is also set to produce renewable heat, which Agrivert intends to use to help heat the pasteurizers and the digesters. And, in later phases of development, surplus heat will be used to dry woodchip to provide a sustainable fuel source.Agrivert was awarded a long-term contract with Oxfordshire county council in March 2009 - at which time it announced its plans to develop what it stated was the first large-scale municipal waste AD plant.

Waste In Wales - Recycling The Creative Way!

August 27th, 2009 by The BookaSkip United Kingdom Skip Hire Team

Three years ago Wales produced twenty five million tonnes of waste. From the seven million tonnes handled by our waste facilities in Wales in 2007, around half of the waste, went to landfill sites. These landfills have eight years of space remaining, which because of the way we live our life will never be enough. And it is not good for our environment.

We need to review what we do with our rubbish and recycling is part of the answer. Trying to reuse it before we bin it is a sensible option.

Val Hunt is an artist who is actioning this plan.

She uses recyclable manufactured materials such foil, take-away containers, computer parts and especially metal from drink cans. Much of her inspiration comes from natural forms. Patterns, colours and logos often appear on the finished, expertly crafted objects.

The Alchemist’s Garden is an inspiring, exciting new exhibition full of exotic plants, birds, pond life and wildlife all constructed from throw away material.

This exhibition unites two of Val Hunt’s touring exhibitions: Reincarnated Rubbish and the Alchemist’s Garden in one. Reincarnated Rubbish is Val Hunt’s touring solo exhibition.

’Reincarnated Rubbish’ and ’The Alchemist’s Garden’ are full of witty, humorous, imaginative and thought provoking constructions which will wet the appetite and encourage everyone to experience the fun of creative recycling.

Her exhibition runs from 7th September until 7th October 2009 at the Washington Gallery in Penarth and is worth a visit.
